Watch dairy farmers’ water story. Learn more at the California Dairy Sustainability Summit.
As the water scarcity challenge has evolved, California’s dairy farmers have continued to adapt, ensuring the most efficient use of each drop of water. In partnership with California Cattle Council, Dairy Cares recently released a new video about Water-Smart Dairy. The video highlights important efforts:
Upcycling byproducts from other agricultural and food production as a major animal feed source has significantly reduced water use.
California dairies recycle and reuse the same water an average of four times.
Dairy farms continue to innovate and work with partners to verify the most water-efficient strategies.Â
By adopting new practices, farms are improving the protection of groundwater resources.
Dairy farmers are working together with others to ensure availability of clean drinking water in their communities.
Despite California dairy families’ efficient water use and broader leadership in planet-smart farming practices, increasingly scarce water supplies pose a serious threat to the sustainability of their operations. Addressing water scarcity is an issue of critical importance to all of California agriculture.

Water will be a key area of focus at this year’s California Dairy Sustainability Summit, to take place on March 24 at the Visalia Convention Center. Attendees will hear from leaders involved in California’s monumental effort to ensure a better water future. Additionally, innovative strategies for on-farm water use will be discussed in a breakout session. Farmers will share their own experiences with implementing new practices and will discuss the importance of funding programs that support adoption.
